Profiling: I Want Order

DECEMBER 10 - JANUARY 21, 2017

Transformer's 14th Annual Solo Exhibition

Johab Silva: Profiling I Want Order, 2016-2017.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Continuing our commitment to highlight the work of exceptional DC-based emerging artists, Transformer's 14th Annual DC Artist Solo Exhibition presents the work of Johab Silva in his first solo exhibition.

Profiling: I Want Order presents a new body of work questioning the importance of material as a means of challenging structures of contemporary society.  Through site-responsive installations and sculpture, Silva investigates the history of labor practices and concepts of modern slavery in connection to environment, worker, race, labor, wages, consumerism, ownership, gender, and social justice. Using found objects, charcoal, coffee, sound, sugar, and cotton as his materials Silva emphasizes these themes throughout the exhibition.

Silva states “We live in a time where materiality is overshadowed by conceptual ideas. Where physical objects in artistic environments are becoming an old theme. Where the lack of attention on what is underneath the everyday products we consume invites us to question our historical interests. Are we artists contributing to slavery? From where do everyday objects we use come? For what cost are they fabricated? Who fabricated them? With what types of materials?”
