Give & Take / Da y Toma
JULY 30 - AUGUST 20, 2009
Give & Take / Da y Toma saw DC-based artists Holly Bass, Breck Brunson, Nilay Lawson, Solomon Sanchez, and Señor Tangcito (aka Tang) presenting their works at Garash Galeria in Mexico City, marking the second of Transformer's artistic exchanges with this dynamic young gallery.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The artists in Give & Take/Da y Toma created and installed new, conceptual works that focus on the dynamics of exchange. Through artistic action, mixed-media installation, and the creation of artist built environments, the participating artists investigated aspects of competition, fair play, ownership, equality, and stewardship. Responding to and inspired by cultural differences and similarities, the global economy, human nature and the natural environment, the artists in Give & Take/Da y Toma playfully challenged audiences to think about and interpret common and uncommon interactions.
Transformer was thrilled to be able to provide the participating Give & Take/Da y Toma artists the opportunity to spend ten days in Mexico City, where they met with peer emerging artists as well as arts leaders, installed their work, engaged with audiences through an opening reception and artist talks, and experienced aspects of life in another federal city.
Give & Take/Da y Toma was made possible in large part by a substantial award from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, with matching support from individual contributions. Many thanks to The Ambassador of Mexico, His Excellency Arturo Sarukhan, and Mrs. Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan, for their championing of this project. Additional thanks to Rodrigo Espinosa and Garash Galeria for the generous support in presenting this exhibition.
