ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Is food about class or identity? Are we as individuals totally responsible for our eating habits? Do our individual preferences influence others? Transformer & guest curator Carolina Mayorga invite artists Chanan Delivuk, Sara Pomerance, Kari Scott, Shannon Young and guests to explore these and other questions about our relationship with food through installation, photography, sculpture, performance, and more.

Oftentimes we are able to make rapid decisions about persons through the technologies they carry on or near themselves. These presumptions are generally associated with high tech gadgets and computers, but there are other counterparts (trailer home vs. house, penny loafer vs. flip flops, cash vs. credit etc.). What would happen if someone were to replace the performance of a tool with actions available in the body?

How to Make the Apple EVIL with Linda Hesh
Saturday, April 28, 2 – 3pm

Learn how a Bible story, monocultures, Kurdistan, and prohibition are all rolled up together in the "common" apple.  Artist Linda Hesh embeds the word EVIL on real apples to use in her artwork. Kool Raunch Collective Performance: Pavlovsk

Kool Raunch Collective is a collaboration between Sabastian Rousseau who studied dance at the Hamburg Ballettzentrum in Germany, and Adrian Parsons whose work has been exhibited at The Fridge and Flashpoint in Washington, DC and Dorian Grey in NYC. Kool Raunch Collective began in 2009, presenting choreographed and guerrilla performances, including an eating contest. The collective seeks to develop new works that integrate dance and improvisation with conceptual art, experimental theatre and original music.

Framework Panel #16 : Perspectives on Food and Culture

Transformer’s FRAMEWORK Panel #16 expands on themes presented in the Bread and Butter exhibition.  Moderated by artist and Bread and Butter Guest Curator Carolina Mayorga, and featuring panelists from a wide range of fields, this panel further investigates the relationship that we have with food by looking closely at how food shapes our sense of social responsibility and personal identity, examining its use in and effects on art, culture, and health. Launched in December 2002 and presented 2-3 times per year, Transformer's FRAMEWORK Panel Series engages artists, arts professionals, cultural leaders, and audiences in conversation to create an oral 'field guide' to encourage and support individual emerging artists and educate audiences through the sharing of best practices within the contemporary visual arts.  For further details on Bread and Butter - Framework Panel #16, including registration, please contact Stephanie Kwak, Transformer’s Program Assistant, at: stephanie@transformerdc.org.
